Available in PDF format, the Census Atlas of the United States is the first comprehensive atlas produced by the United States Census Bureau in over 80 years. The Atlas contains almost 800 maps which look at a range of cultural and socio-economic issues “ranging from language and ancestry characteristics to housing patterns and the geographic distribution of the population.” The atlas can be downloaded by chapters which are arranged by subject matter. If you don’t want to go through the trouble of downloading and printing out the 300 pages of statistics and maps you can always from the U.S. Government Bookstore.

Oddens’ Bookmarks

Started back in 1995 by Roelof Oddens, the curator of the map Library of the Faculty of GeoSciences at the University of Utrecht (The Netherlands), Oddens’ Bookmarks is a phenomenal collection of links to maps and mapping on the Internet. Now with over 220,000 links, visitors to this site can search by keyword, country and category. You can also explore what’s in the extensive database by browsing through the links to the right of the homepage.

Housed at Northwestern University, this web site has an extensive collection of maps collected for the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies. There are over 113 maps dating from the 16th Century that you can search for by keyword, cartographer, date or place of publication. To see all the maps in the collection, simply hit the “search” button without typing in a search term. This returns a listing of all the maps with detailed information about each map. You can sort the list by a variety of parameters including the date and the geographic place. Maps load into a new window with tools to zoom in, zoom out, pan and print are available.
