With a longer than ever Daylight Savings Time (DST) this year (thanks to Congress) set to end, it’s time for those living in the United States to set their clocks back by one hour on Sunday, November 4th. Read all about Daylight Savings Time from Matt over on the About Geography site.
Use the extra hour to do more than just catch up on sleep. Given all the natural hazards occuring lately (fire, hurricane, earthquakes to name some) take some time to make sure you and your family are prepared for any emergencies.
Some things to consider:
- Know alternative evacuation routes out of your neighborhood
- Mitigate potential fire hazards around your home - (i.e. keep the wood piles away from the house)
- Make plans for children, seniors, special needs individuals and pets
- Assemble an emergency kit with at least five days supply of water, food, medications, and other supplies necessary for your needs.
- Have your important documentation in one location and readily available
- Discuss with your child/children what special things they might take in the event of an evacuation. Mental health experts recommend letting children decide on what special things they want to take.
- And as always test smoke detectors, fire extinguisher charge gauges, and the batteries in portable radios and flashlights.
